Introduction to Islam

Introduction

Welcome to the first chapter of Islamic Studies! In this chapter, we will learn about the basics of Islam and its significance in the lives of Muslims around the world.

What is Islam?

Islam is a monotheistic faith followed by over a billion people globally. It was founded by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in the 7th century in Arabia. The word 'Islam' itself means peace, submission, and obedience.

Five Pillars of Islam

Islam is built upon five pillars that form the foundation of a Muslim's life:

  1. Shahada (Faith): The declaration of faith in the oneness of Allah and the prophethood of Muhammad.

  2. Salah (Prayer): Performing the five daily prayers facing towards the Kaaba in Mecca.

  3. Zakat (Charity): Giving a portion of one's wealth to those in need, typically 2.5% of savings annually.

  4. Sawm (Fasting): Observing fasting during the month of Ramadan, abstaining from food, drink, and other physical needs from dawn until sunset.

  5. Hajj (Pilgrimage): Performing the pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in a lifetime for those who are physically and financially able.

Beliefs in Islam

Muslims believe in:

  • Allah (God) as the one and only deity.
  • Prophets sent by Allah, including Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad (peace be upon them).
  • The Quran as the holy book revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
  • Angels, who are spiritual beings created by Allah.
  • The Day of Judgment and life after death.
